Local News in Brief : Quake Aid for Immigrants

Reacting to a heavy demand for earthquake aid from Los Angeles immigrant communities, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has begun printing information about disaster relief in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian and Laotian.
FEMA spokesman Verne Paule said that more than 35,000 disaster assistance flyers have been printed in translated form, the first time that federal relief literature has been distributed in languages other than English and Spanish.
In addition to the new brochures, the state Department of Social Services will furnish translators for families that have difficulty communicating with government disaster officials, he said.
The flyers have been made available at FEMA’s eight disaster application offices and were also sent to more than 100 community organizations in southern California.
