MILLAU, France — Frenchman Regis Clere won the 16th stage of the Tour de France by more than 14 minutes Thursday, but compatriot Charles Mottet of Systeme U retained the leader’s yellow jersey.
Clere rode 118 miles of the 135-mile route from Blagnac to Millau alone, but the tour favorites were not in danger. Clere started the day in 134th place, almost 1 hours behind Mottet.
Mexico’s Raul Alcala of the 7-Eleven team placed second, 14 minutes 13 seconds back, with Jean-Francois Bernard of France, Stephen Roche of Ireland, Andy Hampsten of the United States and Pedro Delgado of Spain next.
Mottet leads Bernard by 1 minute 11 seconds, Roche by 1:26 and Delgado by 3:16 seconds, with Hampsten (7:39 out) eighth in the bicycle race, which ends July 26.
The 17th stage today, a 149-mile route from Millau to Avignon, begins on undulating terrain but flattens out.
