Crimes: Passed and sent to the Senate on a 41-30 vote a bill (AB 1081) by Assemblywoman Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) to establish three pilot “anti-hate crime centers” and create a task force to design school materials to combat prejudice and racism.
Veterans: Passed and sent to the Senate on a 57-10 vote a bill (AB 992) by Assemblyman Tom Hannigan (D-Fairfield) to allow state personal income tax refund checkoffs to help finance a Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Capitol Park. Committee Action:
Radar: The Assembly Transportation Committee approved a bill (SB 756) by Sen. Daniel Boatwright (D-Concord) to authorize the California Highway Patrol to use radar to crack down on speeding trucks and buses, but not speeding automobiles. An 8-4 vote sent the bill to Ways and Means Committee.
Alcohol: The Assembly Governmental Organization Committee approved a bill (SB 764) by Sen. Newton Russell (R-Glendale) to make a first-offense attempt to purchase alcoholic beverages by anyone under 21 years of age an infraction punishable by fine of up to $100. Exposition: Passed and sent to the governor on a 34-0 vote a bill (SB 104) by Sen. Nicholas Petris (D-Oakland) to appropriate $700,000 for construction and operation of a California pavilion in the 1988 World Exposition in Brisbane, Australia. Committee Action:
Schools: The Senate Education Committee approved a bill (AB 1700) by Speaker Pro Tem Mike Roos (D-Los Angeles) designed to encourage urban school districts to build multistory facilities and reduce residential displacement. A 9-0 vote sent the bill to the Appropriations Committee.
