RJR Nabisco reported an 18% increase in second-quarter income, to $299 million. The company, based in Winston-Salem, N.C., said revenue from tobacco operations was up 43%, while revenue from food businesses was up slightly. The cost of the employee voluntary separation incentive program, estimated to be $180 million, was provided for in the second quarter as a restructuring expense. This cost was largely offset by nonrecurring gains, principally the sale of the corporation’s Canadian confectionery business and specialty tobacco brands.
