There finally was good news Tuesday for Dan Rather. After five weeks in third place--and the last two weeks anchored by him--the “CBS Evening News” last week escaped the ratings cellar and ran a close second to the victorious “NBC Nightly News.” According to A.C. Nielsen estimates for the week ending July 3, Rather’s broadcast got the same share of audience--22%--as “Nightly News,” and was only two-tenths of a ratings point behind the 9.7 rating of NBC’s program. ABC’s “World News Tonight” came in third with a 9.1 rating and a 20% audience share. Each ratings point represents 874,000 homes.
