BRUSSELS — The director for Belgium of UNICEF, the U.N. Children’s Fund, was arrested Thursday and charged with indecency and incitement to debauchery against children, the Brussels public prosecutor’s office said.
A UNICEF spokesman confirmed that Jozef Verbeeck, the 63-year-old head of the agency in Belgium, is being held.
Verbeeck’s detention follows the arrest last March of nine people said by the police to be responsible for a major international child pornography ring. They included a volunteer worker for UNICEF in Belgium who is awaiting trial.
