Britain called Iran’s senior envoy to the Foreign Office in London to protest strongly the abduction of a British diplomat in Tehran and said on no account would it answer any charges against him. The development came after the Iranian government said in Tehran that charges are to be pressed against Edward Chaplin, 36, Britain’s second most senior diplomat in Iran. The nature of the charges was not specified. Chaplin was abducted last week by six armed Revolutionary Guards, beaten and detained for 24 hours.
