AF Jet Buzzing Houses Crashes; Pilot Killed

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — An Air Force Reserve jet performing maneuvers in view of a crowd of people crashed and exploded Friday night, killing the pilot and spreading live ammunition around the site, officials said.
“He had been kind of buzzing (residents’ houses) off and on all afternoon,” said Sgt. Vern Reynolds of the Missouri Highway Patrol. “In one of the maneuvers he was making, he was unable to come out of a loop and crashed.”
The pilot’s body was recovered from the wreckage, Reynolds said. His identity was not released.
The plane, identified as an A-10 attack jet, created a large fireball when it crashed about 20 miles southwest of Springfield, Reynolds said. No one on the ground was injured.
