Orange : Roosevelt Surgery Delayed by Accident

Colon surgery was postponed for one week for James Roosevelt, the eldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after he slipped and bumped his head in the bathroom Thursday, hours before his scheduled operation, a UCI Medical Center spokesman said.

A CAT scan, administered after hospital officials learned that Roosevelt had hurt himself at about 4:30 a.m. while on his way to the bathroom, revealed no serious injury, said UCI spokesman Orman Day. Roosevelt, 79, of Newport Beach, was scheduled to have surgery at 10:30 a.m. to remove a lesion in the colon that has been bleeding and may be malignant, Day said.

“We’re going to play it very safe and postpone the surgery for a week,” said Dr. Robert Mason, the chairman of the department of surgery at UCI, who will perform the operation.

Day said Roosevelt would be allowed to go home after an examination today.
