VATICAN CITY — A group of American bishops will brief Pope John Paul II today on his upcoming trip to the United States, alerting him to the possibility of protests during the September visit.
Archbishop John May of St. Louis, president of the U.S. bishops conference, said 19 U.S. church leaders will attend the private meeting with John Paul.
Asked if the group planned to warn him of protests promised in San Francisco by gay rights groups, May said, “It would be a real disservice not to.”
