In a women’s speed-skating competition at Geithus, Norway, Andrea Ehrig of East Germany took more than a second off her own 5,000-meter world record by clocking 7 minutes 31.45 seconds in winning the all-around class European Championships title with an aggregate score of 174.862 time points.

Yvonne van Gennip of the Netherlands was the overall runner-up with 177.226 points and Natalia Artamonova of the Soviet Union placed third with 179.345 points.

In a men’s World Cup speed-skating competition at Baselga Di Pine, Italy, Dan Jansen of the United States and Canadian Gaetan Boucher won the 500- and 1,000-meter sprint events, respectively.

Jansen, who had won another 500-meter World Cup race Saturday, clocked a winning time of 37.82 seconds to finish ahead of fellow American Nick Thomez, who was clocked in 37.97. Ramil Vaidulin of the Soviet Union was third in 38.05.
