Jungling Leads UCSD Women to La Jolla Tournament Title, 74-66

SAN DIEGO — UC San Diego, led by tournament Most Valuable Player Heidi Jungling, beat Claremont Mudd, 74-66, Saturday night to win the women’s championship of the third Michelob-Avia La Jolla tournament at Triton Pavilion.
Jungling, a 6-foot 1-inch center from University City High School, scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Tritons. UCSD (6-7), which also got 19 points and 9 rebounds from Chris McCallum, never led by fewer than four points in the second half against Claremont (6-6).
In the men’s division, UCSD (7-7) beat Pomona Pitzer, 85-71, in the third-place game. Triton Brian Backens led all scorers with 22 points, and teammates Greg Kamansky and Mark Sutherland added 17 apiece.
In the women’s third-place game, Smith College (Mass.) improved its record to 5-4 by beating Notre Dame College (5-8), 63-51.
