“A LITTLE TROMBONE MUSIC.” John Swallow, trombone. GM Recordings 2009. This disc contains extraordinary music played in an ordinary way. Trombonist Vinko Globokar has revealed the drama and power of Luciano Berio’s “Sequenza V” (on Deutsche Grammophon). Here Swallow actually induces a live audience into laughing at it. Darius Milhaud’s “Concerto d’Hiver” for trombone and strings is a piece of youthful verve--yet it is here rendered without the precision and conviction necessary to evoke its charms.
