State Sen. Ed Davis (R-Valencia) challenged Supreme Court Chief Justice Rose Elizabeth Bird to a debate on the death penalty and her performance on the court. But Bird, who faces confirmation to another term on the November ballot, declined. “Ed Davis should stop hiding behind the chief justice’s skirts in his campaign for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate,” said Bird spokesman Steven M. Glazer. Davis is one of the leaders of the campaign to defeat Bird.
