Oakland public school teachers went on strike after 10 months of talks failed to result in a new contract. Substitute teachers were called in to keep classes open. Wages range from $16,431 a year for first-year teachers to $29,981 for experienced teachers with doctorates. The district had offered to raise wages 19.5% over three years.
