Sylmar came into its nonleague game on Saturday night against No. 16-ranked Sun Valley Village Christian with an uninspiring 12-11 record.
The Spartans pulled off a 65-63 upset victory.
Sylmar, which competes in City Section Division II, is finally getting its group of players who sat out last season into a comfort zone.
One of the those players rising up is Devenir Duruisseau, a 6-foot-8 junior who had a huge game. He had 19 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
Bryan Alberts had 25 points for Village Christian (17-3).
