The band: Sleeping Bags, the latest Los Angeles side-project from the brothers Kivel (Princeton, Kisses).
The sound: Sleeping Bags trade in Princeton’s folk-pop formalism and Kisses’ lounge-disco for the best parts of 1987. Throughout the group’s self-titled debut, Dinosaur Jr.’s searing lead guitars, My Bloody Valentine’s saturated riffs and typically reverb-drenched New Wave percussion back the band’s pillow-soft melodies. With recent indie breakthroughs such as Yuck and the Captured Tracks roster (Craft Spells, Beach Fossils) also embracing the era, Sleeping Bags’ revivalism couldn’t have come at a better time.
The random: Band member Abe Burns manages L.A. Unheard alumni Gamble House when he’s not laying down the shoegaze.
The details: Sleeping Bags join Active Child, Touche and the Static Jacks at the Echo on Monday; the band’s debut album is due Sept. 13 on Easter Everywhere Records.
