California Highway Patrol officers arrested a Glendale man on suspicion of drunk driving Sunday after an early morning crash off of the 5 Freeway that killed one passenger and injured another.
Jose Mariano Spillari, 22, was placed under arrest at USC Medical Center, where he and a 21-year-old male passenger were taken with major injuries after the 4 a.m. crash. A second passenger, a 21-year-old Los Angeles man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of the two passengers were not immediately available.
Investigators say Spillari was driving a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass in the wrong direction on the Colorado Street freeway extension in Glendale when he veered off the roadway and struck a tree. The rear passenger, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected through the rear window and sustained fatal injuries, authorities said.
