Extra weight isn’t just a cosmetic issue — by contributing to such medical issues as diabetes, hypertension and depression, it’s a public health concern as well. So if you’re tired of hearing that Americans weigh too much and you’d rather hear what policymakers can do about it, head to Rand Corp. in Santa Monica next week for a lively discussion about the role of the community in promoting healthy habits.
For example, what can local activists do to encourage healthy behaviors, such as biking to work? What can be done to counteract fast-food advertising campaigns?
The panel discussion will include:
- Kim Belshe, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency
- Jot Condie, president and chief executive of the California Restaurant Assn.
- Dr. Deborah Cohen, a senior natural scientist at Rand
- Roland Sturm, a Rand senior economist
The program begins at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 28. It is open to the public, but seating is limited and advance registration is required. To sign up, go to the event website at www.rand.org/events/2010/01/28.
The media advisory says refreshments will be served, but no word yet on how healthy those snacks will be.
